This is a (very) lose adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe's short story "The Pit and the Pendulum". Poe fans will also find references to other classic Poe stories through out the movie. It is the story of a young couple during the Spanish Inquisition, Maria (Rona De Ricci) and Antonio (Jonathan Fuller). Maria has been accused of being a Witch by the Grand Inquisitor Torquemada (Lance Henriksen). While imprisoned awaiting interrogation by the record keeper Francisco (Jeffrey Combs), Maria meets a real Witch Esmeralda (Frances Bay) who teachers her how to use witch craft for good. All the while Antonio tries his hardest to free her, managing to get himself into trouble. This is a good movie and is along the lines of a true horror flick.
